Ingredients

  • 1 medium tomato, roasted or charred

  • 4 cloves garlic, roasted and peeled

  • ½ cup chopped white onion

  • 1 Tbsp. canola or vegetable oil
  • 1-2 serrano or jalapeño chiles, seeds removed
  • 3½-4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 3 large ripe Hass avocados
  • 1-2 Tbsp. lime juice, or to taste
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2. Toast fresh or dried avocado leaves on a heated dry skillet or a comal for up to a minute on each side, or until fragrant
  • 4. Add the chile, garlic, ground avocado leaves, and the broth, and bring to a boil
  • 5. Peel and coarsely chop the avocados and add to the broth with the lime juice
