  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 egg whites, or 4 tablespoons meringue powder mixed with  1/2 cup warm water
  • 4 cups (1 pound) confectioners' sugar
  • Paste food coloring in various colors

  • For the Decorations
  • Colored sugar crystals, sanding sugar, sprinkles, candy dots, and/or small sugared flowers
