This soupwith caramelized onions in a rich beef broth, flavoured with red wine, topped with crusty bread and Gruyére, and placed under the broiler until the cheese starts to bubble, is just one of the recipes listed for Date Night
Ladle the soup into oven safe bowls and top evenly with cheese. Season, to taste with salt and pepper. Remove the thyme sprigs and bay leaves from the soup
Frenchonionsoup is a type of soup made out of caramelized onions in a beef stock base, originally based on a simple Roman onionsoup where it was popular dish for poor people, as onions were plentiful and easy to grow
Add a bit of cheese, followed by a few toasted croutons and finally topped with more cheese. Several versions of French-style, onion-basedsoups have been tinkered with through the years
Add the onions, and season with salt, pepper and tarragon. I'm so thankful he's with me. In one of Jennie's recent posts, she shared a recipe for FrenchOnionSoup
'Apple FrenchOnionSoup'. French bread, sliced. 3 pounds onions, sliced (about 12-15 onions). 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped. 1 1/2 cup gruyere or fontina, shredded. Add the onions and water and cook, covered, until completely tender and caramelized and golden, about 2 HOURS, adding more water if needed. Add the chopped apple and thyme and cook for 1 minute. Season the soupwith salt and pepper and divide the between 4 oven safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of French bread, followed by the cheese, and broil until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown, (about 2-3 minutes). 3 pounds onions. 12-15 onions. 1 teaspoon thyme. 1 1/2 cup gruyere
Another traditional way is croutonswith melted cheese. I have made my frenchonionsoupwith different bread(like) toppings, under melted cheese, and they are all good
Slice the onions using a mandolin slicer or with a sharp knife. Top the bread with the grated cheese and put the bowl back in the oven so it can broil until cheese is golden and bubbly
I also don't like fighting with full-sized pieces of French bread covered in cheese, floating in my soup, so I suggest bite-sized toasted pieces of bread instead
If desired, garnish with a sprig of thyme and serve. The warm, rich flavor of this FrenchOnionSoupwith the melted cheese and cheese crouton is irresistible
