  • 1 lb boneless beef sirloin, or tri tip steak, also called culotte steak in my market. The tri tip steak is very tender and juicy.
  • 2 cups fresh sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 3-1/2 cups beef broth or more
  • 2 medium carrots, sliced
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking barley
  • 2 tbsps minced parsley
