  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 celery ribs, chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper flakes
  • 1 cup vegetable broth or 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup basil, fresh or 2 tablespoons basil, dried
  • 1 (16 ounce) can chickpeas
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
