Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup yellow split moong dal/pasi parupu/split green gram
  • 1 cup roughly chopped spinach/keerai (optional)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tbsp oil + 1 tbsp ghee/clarified butter
  • 1/2 tsp peppercorns/kali mirch/karuppu malagu
  • 1/2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 2 green chillies slit (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 10-12 cashew nuts (optional)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves.
  • 3/4 cup toor dal//tuvaram paruppu/pigeon peas
  • 2 drumsticks or 250g drumsticks chopped to the size of your index finger.
  • one small lime size tamarind/puli/imli
  • 4 tsp sambhar powder (or to taste)
  • 2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 + 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds/rai
  • 1/2 tsp split urad dal/black gram
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds/vendayam/methi seeds
  • 1/4 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • coriander leaves/daniya to garnish
  • water as required
