Dry Roast the ingredients mentioned under for 'Masala Powder' in a very low flame until all the ingredients are dry and aromatic
Allow it to cool. Grind the spices into a fine powder and keep it aside.
Clean the horse gram and wash them thoroughly to remove any debris or dust.
Soak them with enough water and leave them aside for overnight or for atleast 6-8 hours.
Wash and remove the soaked water.
Pour enough water to cover the Horsegrams.
Pressure cook the lentils for 6-8 whistles. Drain the water. Set aside.
Take a pan and add a teaspoon of sesame oil.
Heat Oil in a pan.
Saute finely chopped Shallots and Garlics until onions turn translucent.
Add Tomatoes and saute until they turn soft for few minutes.
Add Dry Roasted Masala and mix it well.
Add cooked Horse Grams and half a cup of cooked water and mix well.
Turn off the heat and allow it to cool.
Grind the mixture into a coarse paste.
For Tempering :
Heat Sesame Oil in a pan.
Splutter the Mustard Seeds, Dry Red Chillies and Curry Leaves.
Pour this mixture into the ground Horse Gram Paste.Serve hot along with Rice topped with a drizzle of Sesame Oil or Ghee.
Horse gram take longer time to cook.
Rinse them thoroughly to remove any debris or dust from the Horse grams.
Soak them overnight or atleast for 6-8 hours.
Drain the water used to soak and rinse thoroughly.
Cook them in pressure cooker or in a saucepan until they are well cooked.
Do not add water used for cooking while mashing them.
Can use the excess water and some cooked Horsegrams to prepare Kollu Rasam.
Use the leftover kollu water for making kollu rasam. Soak gram overnight. Kollu or Horsegram or Whole Lentils - 1/2 Cup. Mustard seeds - 1/4tsp. Ghee/Oil - 1tsp. In 1/2tsp oil saute all ingredients except tamarind. Pressure cook with soaked horsegram for (3-4whistles). 1/2tsp oil saute all ingredients except tamarind

Coming to today's recipe- Kollu Rasam, It is a spicy tangy soup prepared with horsegram. Kollu is supposed to have lot of health benefits like remedy for cold, lowering cholesterol, helps in loosing weight etc
Kollu (or) Horsegram is one of the healthiest pulses as for as i come to know about it. Some recipes such as Kollu Rasam to be served with rice, Kollu Sundal for evening Snack and this chutney to pair with Idli or dosa as a side dish
The saved Kollu water can be used to make the Kollu rasamEnjoy your Kollu Chutney. Pressure cook 3/4th cup of Kollu. 3waterPour oil in a hot panAdd 1/2 tsp Jeera & hing (perungayam)When it splutters, add curry leavesAdd coarsely cut garlic cloves (2)Add red chillies (1 or 2)add 1/2 tsp coriander seeds or dhaniaFry until raw smell goesAdd Onions (1)Add very little tamarind When onions are translucent turn off the stoveAllow it to cool Drain & Save the excess kollu water for delicious Kollu Rasam COARSE grind the onion mixture together with the cooked kollu & salt per taste & may be the kollu water or regular water if necessary. 1/2 tsp coriander seeds
