Coming to today's recipe- KolluRasam, It is a spicy tangy soup prepared with horsegram. KolluRasam. Kollu is supposed to have lot of health benefits like remedy for cold, lowering cholesterol, helps in loosing weight etc
like chutney/Dip, gravy, vada, podi n more. N that day I was too lazy to do anything, and my eyes clicked the horsegram powder, so no delay I prepared this simple variety rice
I have posted Varagu Adai / Kodo Millet pancake in my space before. Varagu Rice / Kodo Millet - 2 cupsIdli rice - 1 cupHorsegram / Kollu - 1/2 cup (you can replace it with bengal gram dhal)Thoor Dal / Thuvar Dhal - 1/2 cupMoong dal / Split yellow dhal - 2 tablespoonUrad dhal - 2 tablespoonsCurry Leaves - 10-15Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoonGrated Coconut - 1/4 cup (optional)Red chillies - 10 (adjust to your spice level)Salt to tasteAsafoetida - 2 Pinch or 1/8 teaspoonOnion - 1 (chopped finely)Coriander leaves - 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)Oil for cooking Ada. Wash and soak Kodo Millet, Idli rice, Horsegram, thoor dal, urad dhal together for 6 to 8 hours. Drizzle 1/4 oil around it
Grind them with sprouted horsegram and red chilli into a batter. Raw rice - 1/2 cup. Idli rice - 1/2 cup. Sprouted horsegram/kollu - 1 cup. Ginger- 1/2 inch (finely chopped)
Use the leftover kollu water for making kollurasam. Soak gram overnight. Kollu or Horsegram or Whole Lentils - 1/2 Cup. Mustard seeds - 1/4tsp. Ghee/Oil - 1tsp. In 1/2tsp oil saute all ingredients except tamarind. Pressure cook with soaked horsegram for (3-4whistles). 1/2tsp oil saute all ingredients except tamarind
Heat oil in a pan & add seasoning ingredients to splutter and pour over Rasam mixture. Keep Rasam in medium heat & turn off the heat when it starts to boil
Allow to boil nicely and at this stage add rasam powder and coriander leaves. Rasam Powder -1 tsp. Thuthuvalai / Purple pea fruited eggplant leaf - 4 to 5. Pepper -1/2 tsp. Jeera -1/2 tsp. Coriander powder -1/4 tsp. Tomato -1/2. Turmeric powder - less than 1/4 tsp. Oil -1/4 tsp. Now add required water till you get rasam consistency (say about 3 cups of water). In Kerala, Tomato rasam/Thakkalirasam is mostly served in Onam sadya. Basically Kerala style rasam can be done easily with instant rasam powder or with freshly ground spices
