  • 1/4 cup skinned black gram / ulundu / urad dal
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds / jeera
  • salt, as needed
  • 1/4 teaspoon hing / asafoetida
  • oil for deep frying (use canola, sunflower, or vegetable oil)
