Peel the pumpkin, remove the seeds and cut into 5cm/2" cubes. Cut bacon into short strips. Brown bacon over moderate heat in a large soup pot adding some of the butter if the bacon looks like sticking
Make the topping first by placing all the topping ingredients into the food processor bowl and process with the metal chopping blade until the butter is chopped into small pieces
Cut the fish fillets lengthwise into 3/4" (2cm) strips, then crosswise into fingers. Cut crosswise with the knife at an angle so the fingers taper at each end
Beat the eggs. Crush the garlic and add to the eggs with the salt. Mix again. Add the firmly packed grated courgette and cheese then stir in enough self-raising flour to make a batter consistency
Chop the onion very finely while the oil heats in a large pan. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until the onion is starting to brown
